KOSHER / FOOD

 

CAN I FIND KOSHER FOOD PRODUCTS IN BARBADOS?

  • Yes. The local supermarkets carry many kosher products.
  • The common Hashgachot (kosher certifications) from the USA such as OU, OK, etc. are prevalent.
  • Kosher meat and most Kosher dairy products are not sold in the local stores.
  • At times, meat can be purchased from Chabad depending on availability. Email [email protected] for details.
  • Wine and/or grape juice can usually be purchased from Chabad, depending on availability. Email [email protected] for details.

(Please note - the wine sold locally in many stores as Kosher does not have a reputable Kosher certification and is not recommended.)

BARTENURA MOSCATO is now available for purchase at Cavi and Vino (Welches) and at Bryden Stokes (Barbarees Hill location)!

WHICH STORES SHOULD I SHOP AT FOR KOSHER FOOD PRODUCTS?

  • The largest supermarket chain is Massy.
  • Clifton Market is a specialty store that carries a wonderful selection of Kosher products. They have two locations, one on the West Coast (behind Limegrove Mall) and one on the South Coast in Worthing.

 

CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD INTO BARBADOS?

  • Generally, yes. Officially, meat & dairy products require a permit which can be attained by reaching out via email to the Vet Services Department: [email protected]
  • Alternatively, the permit application can be processed for you by Chabad for a 75 USD fee.
  • Poultry is currently banned for import and will be confiscated if found.

 

IS THE LOCAL MILK ON THE ISLAND KOSHER?

  • We do not have information regarding the standards of the local milk production.
  • Several alternative options (e.g. almond/coconut/soy/rice milks) with a Hechsher (Kosher certification) are readily found in the local supermarkets. 

 

ARE THERE KOSHER RESTAURANTS ON THE ISLAND?

  • Not yet.

 

IS THERE AN OPTION FOR KOSHER FOOD ON THE ISLAND?

  • Yes, we have a kosher catering service; see here.

 

DO YOU HAVE A CHEF FOR-HIRE SERVICE?

  • No.

 

DO YOU OFFER A DINE-IN SERVICE?

  • No.

 

CAN WE JOIN FOR SHABBAT MEALS?

  • Of course! Chabad of Barbados welcomes all to participate in our Shabbat and holidays meals. To RSVP, click here.

 


 

MINYAN

 

DO YOU HAVE A MINYAN?

  • During the winter high-season, we have Minyan on Shabbat and at times during the week.
  • If you're traveling with a large group, we can explore the possibility of assembling a minyan.

 

CAN YOU ARRANGE FOR A MINYAN AT OUR RESORT?

  • If you are traveling to our island with a large group, we can explore the possibility of assembling a minyan at the Chabad House; we cannot arrange for a Minyan at your resort.

  • No.

 

WHAT CAN I DO IF I NEED THE MIKVAH DURING MY VISIT?

  • We are currently in the midst of building a beautiful, modern Mikvah. You can contribute to making this special mitzvah a reality by donating here.

IS BARBADOS SAFE FOR VACATIONERS?

  • Thank G‑d, Barbados is considered very safe for tourists. 

 

DO I NEED TO EXCHANGE MONEY INTO THE LOCAL BBD CURRENCY?

  • No, being that the Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar (at a rate of 2BBD to 1USD) you can use US dollars and Credit Cards. (Ensure that your provider will not charge you a foreign transaction fee.)

 

WHO FUNDS CHABAD OF BARBADOS?

  • We are independently supported by friends locally and from around the world. We are not funded by Chabad headquarters in New York or the local government. You can partner with Chabad of Barbados here!

 

WHICH OTHER CARIBBEAN ISLANDS HAVE CHABAD?
